The Dashboard for the State of the Environment aims to make European environmental data accessible to a broad audience through user-oriented indicators displayed in an easy-to-approach interface. The overarching goal of the project is to equip the broader public and policymakers with a user-friendly, customisable dashboard that visualises an extensible collection of indicators that describe the state of the environment in near real-time.
It is an EOSC Service that is being developed by the Cluster of Environmental Research Infrastructures (ENVRI). In a nutshell, the Dashboard: (1) provides information on the state of the
environment (for public, policy makers), (2) offers a switchboard to applications to explore
data and models (for scientists), (3) helps us understand the impacts of a changing
climate on biodiversity, environment and societies, and (4) contributes to the improved understanding of our universe.

Challenge
The project set out to find a solution for displaying data of different natures and from multiple sources in a coherent and user-oriented interface. The developing teams created interchangeable and rearrangeable frames, each carrying its own customisation menu. When logged in, user preferences are saved for easier and faster access to the data.
Solution
Through EOSC Future, the Dashboard has been developed using several EOSC services available on the EOSC Platform. As an integration platform that supports scientific workflows, the EOSC provides core services to support research infrastructures to further develop or improve their services, which are also onboarded on the EOSC Platform, and become available to all EOSC users.
The Dashboard will be part of the ENVRI-Hub, a common virtual interface for ENVRI-FAIR data and services that will be integrated into the EOSC Platform, enabling users from a broader scope to easily access the displayed data.
Impact
Through the Dashboard for the State of the Environment, non-technical users outside the field can have access to a powerful tool that gathers a significant trove of European environmental data in one location. The simplicity of the interface lowers the threshold for non-specialists and citizen scientists to access the data. At the same time, higher-end technical possibilities offer additional options for more advanced users.
An extensible collection of environmental indicators resulting from good quality data and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) services provided by ENVRI allow users to visualise the State of the Environment on an interactive interface. The Dashboard is universal and flexible. Each user can configure their own Dashboard, customise the view and choose the indicators of their interest by logging in with their EOSC credentials or creating their own Dashboard account.
